Plan the Perfect Surprise Proposal in Lisbon!

Planning a surprise proposal in Lisbon? Well, you're in for quite the memorable and romantic adventure! But hey, I get it; coming up with unique proposal ideas and nailing down all the nitty-gritty details can feel a bit overwhelming with so many picturesque spots to choose from. After all, Lisbon is so beautiful!

Especially if you're new to Lisbon or just passing through, having a local's guidance can be a game-changer in your quest to find that perfect location to propose. Lucky for you, that's where I step in. I've got a knack for capturing the enchantment of proposals in Lisbon and other charming cities across Portugal.

Oliver and Nat's Dream Proposal

Oliver and Natalie had been looking forward to their dream vacation in Portugal for a while now. Lisbon, with its undeniable charm and rich history, felt like the perfect place for Oliver to take that leap and pop the question. However, he had a couple of specific things in mind to make sure this moment would be absolutely perfect!

First and foremost, he wished for the location to be away from the bustling tourist spots. Nat had mentioned never wanting to be proposed to in front of a crowd. She also had a deep appreciation for the traditional European-like architecture, so something similar had to be the backdrop for the proposal. And last but not least, Oliver wanted a beautiful and breathtaking view.

Discovering the Hidden Treasures for an Epic Proposal in Lisbon

Lisbon's small, local neighborhoods, like Alcantrara are like hidden treasures waiting to be discovered amid the busy cityscape. Only a local would know, that Miradouro de Santo Amaro, would be the perfect place for their surprise proposal in Lisbon.

Miradouro de Santo Amaro perches atop Lisbon's hilly terrain, offering a peaceful and sweeping escape from the city's lively buzz. This charming lookout treats you to awe-inspiring views of the Tagus River, the iconic 25 de Abril Bridge, and the historic neighborhoods lining the riverbanks. It's all cozily shaded by lush trees and graced with that classic Portuguese architecture, creating this serene oasis where you can soak in Lisbon's beauty while soaking up the golden sun.  Best of all, most tourists have no idea it exists.

When I told Oliver about this spot, he was thrilled! It fit exactly what he was searching for. He was still a bit concerned – what if it got too crowded? . To reassure him, I personally visited  Miradouro de Santo Amaro, on a Friday evening in July (the same day of the week he was planning to propose).

It was pretty much deserted, especially when you stack it up against the other popular Miradouros in Lisbon like Miradouro de Santa Luzia, Miradouro de Portas do Sol, and Miradouro de Senhora do Monte.

On the big day, everything was all set to go perfectly... except for one little detail – it happened to be one of the busiest days Lisbon had ever seen. Why? Well, the Pope was paying a visit to city for World Youth Day, and you can just picture the chaos that ensued. Streets were shut down and jam-packed with visitors. My job suddenly became a careful dance around street closures, taxi routes, and bus schedules.

Transportation Options to Miradouro de Santo Amaro

Now, if you're thinking of planning a surprise proposal in Lisbon, and here at Miradouro de Santo Amaro, don’t worry. There are typically plenty of transportation options to get you there from various parts of the city. Just keep in mind that trams and buses might not always stick to their schedules, which is quite the norm here in Lisbon. And be ready for a bit of uphill trekking if you end up walking or taking public transportation.  Here are some transportation options to the Miradouro.

  • Tram: One of the most iconic and scenic ways to reach the viewpoint is by taking Tram 15E. This tram route takes you along the historic tram tracks, providing picturesque views along the way.

  • Bus: Several bus routes, including Bus 201 and Bus 751, connect different parts of Lisbon to Miradouro de Santo Amaro. I usually use Google Maps to help me navigate the bus system in Lisbon.

  • Taxi/Uber/Bolt/FreeNow: Taxis are readily available throughout Lisbon. But I find ride-sharing apps to be more convenient and affordable.

  • Car: If you prefer to drive, you can reach the viewpoint by car. There is steet parking nearby, but keep in mind that parking can be limited, especially during peak times.

Each transportation option has its own charm and convenience, so choose the one that best suits your preferences and itinerary.

And Finally….The Unforgettable Proposal in Lisbon

The proposal went off without a hitch! As soon as Oliver and Nat arrived, I spotted them immediately. I played it cool, sitting on a bench and soaking up the sunny day like any other bystander. Our plan was in place: Oliver would take out his phone for a seemingly ordinary selfie, and that was my signal to be prepared. After taking the selfie, he smoothly stashed the phone in his back pocket and gracefully dropped to one knee. And as expected, she said “yes”!

Are you also considering planning an epic surprise proposal in Lisbon? Here are some other great locations:

Miradouro da Senhora do Monte: This hilltop viewpoint offers a stunning panoramic view of Lisbon and is a perfect place for a surprise proposal in Lisbon. I highly recommend choosing sunrise hours if you prefer a less crowded setting.

Local Tip: If you decide to plan a sunset proposal, consider booking a table at Secret Garden LX for some celebratory drinks. It's conveniently located at the Miradouro and is a bit of a local secret.

Belém Tower: This iconic riverside fortress is not only a historic monument but also a symbol of Lisbon. Proposing here against the backdrop of the Tagus River is a timeless choice.

Local Tip: Avoid an afternoon proposal here if you can. It can be extremely crowded.

Alfama District: The narrow, winding streets of Alfama are brimming with old-world charm. You can choose a quiet corner or a cozy cafe to pop the question.

São Jorge Castle: This medieval castle offers breathtaking views of Lisbon. You can propose in the castle grounds with the cityscape as your backdrop.

Local tip: Keep in mind that São Jorge Castle, and other historical sites usually charges a fee for taking professional photos, so consider this when planning your proposal in Lisbon.
